Three Tips to Prevent Bugs Biting This Summer

admin by admin
May 8, 2026

We all spend more time outside as the weather warms up. While the sun and fresh air are good for us, they also make us more susceptible to bites bugs.

Bugs are more than just a nuisance. Some bugs can spread diseases that make us sick. Even if they don’t carry diseases, their bites are itchy and irritating.

How can we enjoy summer without being bitten by insects?

Use Insect Repellent

Use insect repellent to keep bugs away. The repellents emit a smell that bugs dislike. It keeps them away so that they cannot bite you.

Choose a repellent with DEET, or one that is based on plants and contains PMD. Follow the instructions on the label. Apply the sunscreen to all exposed skin and clothing. Reapply as directed by the label every few hours.

Wear Protective Clothing

Bugs can get through loose clothing and into your skin. Wear clothing that covers your entire body. Wearing long-sleeved clothing, long pants, socks and closed-toed shoes is a good choice.

Bugs can enter your clothing through holes or loose knit. Be sure to replace or repair any damaged clothing prior to wearing it outside or wearing multiple layers.

Beware local outbreaks and travel warnings

Sometimes, bugs can carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans. They can be mild, severe or even deadly. Be aware of any travel warnings or local outbreaks.

Take extra precautions if you are traveling to an area with an outbreak of a bugborne disease. If you feel sick after visiting an area where there is a bug-borne disease outbreak, consult your doctor right away.

If You Do Get Bit…

If you are bitten by a bug or stung, don’t scratch it. Scratching the bite can cause skin damage and increase your chances of getting an infection.

If you want to reduce swelling, clean the area with soap and warm water. Then apply a cold compress. If you are itching, you can apply hydrocortisone or an antihistamine over-the counter.

Aloe Vera can also help the healing process, whether it is a live plant, or a commercial lotion.

If you feel ill or if the bite looks unusual or infected, see a doctor right away.
